ARTIST, CHARLES CARTER, GREW UP IN THE HEART OF THE SONORAN DESERT, SURROUNDED BY ITS ABSTRACT BEAUTY. CHARLES SPENT A LOT OF TIME WITH HIS FATHER EXPLORING THE DESERT. HE DEVELOPED A LOVE OF THE NATIVE FLORA AND NATIVE ANIMAL LIFE. HE WAS COINCIDENTLY INFLUENCED BY THE LOCAL SOUTHWESTERN SPANISH AMERICAN AND NATIVE INDIAN CULTURES, WHEN IT CAME TO THE USE OF COLOR IN HIS WORK.
WHEN CHARLES WAS VERY YOUNG, HE DEVELOPED A LOVE FOR BOTH THE PERFORMING ARTS, AS WELL AS THE VISUAL ARTS, WHILE IN HIGHSCHOOL. HE WAS AWARDED THE LEAD ROLE IN THE MUSICAL
"BYE BYE BIRDIE", AS CONRAD BIRDIE. HE WAS HOWEVER UNABLE TO PLAY THE ROLE, AS HE WAS SIMULTANEOUSLY ON THE TRACK TEAM. CHARLES WAS THE FASTEST SPRINTER AT ARCADIA HIGH SCHOOL, IN NORTH EAST PHOENIX, AND UNFORTUNATELY WAS UNABLE TO PARTICIPATE IN BOTH VENUES. THE INDIVIDUAL, WHO WAS HIS UNDERSTUDY . WENT ON TO A CAREER ON BROADWAY. CHARLES WAS ALSO A CONTEMPORARY OF BOTH LYNDA CARTER, AND STEPHEN SPIELBERG, WHO ATTENDED ARCADIA HIGH SCHOOL WHEN CHARLES WAS ENROLLED.
AFTER CHARLES' ENLISTMENT IN THE NAVY DURING VIETNAM, HE ENROLLED IN THE COLLEGE OF ARCHITECTURE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF ARIZONA. IT WAS HERE THAT HE WAS INTRODUCED TO PHOTOGRAPHY, LIFE DRAWING, AND ARCHITECTURAL EXCERCISES THAT ENHANCED HIS KEEN EYE AND DISCIPLINE FOR THE FINE ART OF PAINTING. HIS LAST YEAR AT THE UNIVERSITY OF ARIZONA WAS SPENT AS AN EXCHANGE STUDENT AT THE UNIVERSIDAD DE LE SALLE IN MEXICO CITY. HE EXCELLED IN AN ALL SPANISH-SPEAKING CLASS, AS THE NUMBER ONE STUDENT IN ADVANCED ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN. IN ADDITION, HIS LACK OF SPANISH LANGUAGE SKILLS, AT THE TIME, WERE NOT COMMUNSURATE WITH HIS HIGH LEVEL OF ACADEMIC ACHEIVEMENT.
UPON GRADUATION, CHARLES MOVED TO HOUSTON TEXAS WHERE HE MET THE LOVE OF HIS LIFE, CHARLAINE, HIS WIFE. THEY LIVED IN HOUSTON WHERE CHARLES WORKED FOR AN ARCHITECTURAL FIRM AND ALSO WORKED WITH PAT LOPEZ A NATIONALLY RENOWNED ARCHITECTURAL ILLUSTRATOR WHO WAS CREATING WORKS FOR BOTH SKIDMORE OWINGS AND MERRILL, THE LARGEST DESIGN FIRM IN THE WORLD AND ALSO WORLD RENOWNED ARCHITECT PHILLIP JOHNSON.
,
AFTER TEXAS, CHARLES AND HIS WIFE MOVED TO THE BEAUTIFUL MONTEREY PENINSULA AND HAVE BEEN LIVING THERE FOR OVER 40 YEARS. MORE THAN HALF OF THAT TIME CHARLES HAS BEEN AN ACCOMPLISHED ARTIST HAVING PARTICIPATED IN SEVERAL ONE MAN SHOWS AND ALSO WINNING NATIONAL ACCLAIM AS A FINALIST WITH ART COMES ALIVE, CINCINATTI OHIO. HE WAS ACCEPTED TO THE SAUCELITO ART FESTIVAL, A VERY COMPETITIVE AND EXCLUSIVE FESTIVAL. HE WAS ALSO FEATURED IN DESTIG MAGAZINE A BRITISH PUBLICATION IN AN ARTICLE AS ONE OF THE TOP EMERGING ARTISTS IN THE ART WORLD. CONCURRENTLY HE WAS PUBLISHED IN NEW YORKS ART BUSINESS NEWS AS ONE OF A HANDFUL OF THE TOP EMERGING ARTISTS IN THE WORLD. CHARLES IS A MUSEUM QUALITY ARTIST AND PRODUCES WORK FULL OF WHIMSY AND YET IT HAS THE FEEL OF A CLASSIC OR EARLY 20S STYLE OF PAINTER AKIN TO AN UPLIFTED AMADEO MODIGLIANI, WITH A MEXICAN INFLUENCE FROM RIVERA, PENA AND MORA. HE PAINTS STILL LIFES, LANDSCAPES, AND IS KNOWN FOR HIS WHIMSICAL PORTRAITS OF WOMEN AND MEN WHO ARE ALMOST BELIEVEABLE BUT YET REMOVED FROM CURRENT REALITY BY THEIR TIMELESS IMAGERY. HIS FIGURES ARE ELONGATED SOMETIMES TO THE EXTREME, BUT REMAIN PALATABLE.
CHARLES AND HIS WIFE DUE TO THEIR FIMILIARITY WITH SEVERAL LATIN COUNTRIES, CHILE, AND PANAMA, HAVE EMBRACED THE MEXICAN CULTURE. WHILE THEIR PERMANENT RESIDENCE IS IN MONTEREY CALIFORNIA THEY HAVE BRANCHED OUT AND ARE LIVING PART OF THE YEAR DURING THE SEASON IN BAJA MEXICO AS PERMANENT RESIDENTS. THEIR HOME AWAY FROM MONTEREY IS ON THE SEA OF CORTEZ. THEY HAVE EMBRACED THE LOCAL CULTURE AND ARE INVOLVED IN CHARITY WORK IN THE CITY OF SAN FELIPE. CHARLES CONTINUES HIS WORK HERE AND IS IN THE PROCESS OF CREATING A LARGE MURAL ON HIS RESIDENCE. HE ALSO EXHIBITS HIS WORK IN GALLERIA IDA VICTORIA IN SAN JOSE LOS CABOS ON THE SOUTHERN TIP OF THE BAJA PENINSULA.
iT IS CHARLES' GOAL TO CREATE POSITIVE IMAGERY THROUGH UPLIFTING COLORS IN CONTRAST TO A LARGE NUMBER OF HIS CONTEMPORARIES THAT ARE FRANKLY DOING QUITE THE OPPOSITE. HIS BROAD SMILE IS COMMUNSURATE WITH HIS ART, OPEN, FREE, AND WHIMSICAL WITHOUT BEING SLAPSTICK. PEOPLE WHO HAVE PURCHASED HIS ART ARE OFTEN TIMES REPEAT BUYERS.
